Signal Google Sends TPU AI Chips to Orbit for Testing
Summary
Google said its Project Suncatcher is scheduled for its first test in orbit, launching a prototype satellite to evaluate how Google Tensor Processing Units perform in space. The prototype carries four Trillium TPUs and is due to launch on Oct. 1 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 on the shared Transporter-18 mission, built with Planet. The refrigerator-sized craft, called MVP, draws about 1 kW of solar power. It will run AI workloads, including Gemini queries, in bursts of roughly 15 minutes before pausing to cool. Suncatcher is a long-term research moonshot exploring whether space could host scalable machine-learning infrastructure. In low Earth orbit, satellites can receive near-constant sunlight and up to eight times more solar power than on Earth.
