Signal Spain could see about 45,000 resistance-related deaths a year by 2050
Summary
The report says recent international and national projections point to an even more worrying scenario for antibiotic resistance. If current trends hold, resistance-related deaths in Spain could reach about 45,000 a year by 2050. That would equal roughly 10 percent of all deaths and about a third of deaths caused by cancer. Compared with the 24,000 resistance-related deaths recorded in Spain in 2023, this would amount to nearly a doubling. The report sees in these numbers the reality of antibiotics losing effectiveness, turning once easily treated infections into serious problems. It stresses, however, that adequate access, responsible use, the national response plan and AI-assisted early detection and drug discovery can still slow the trend.
