Trend BCI-based neural circuit modulation for precision mental health care
Summary
BCI-based neural circuit modulation interprets electrical, magnetic, blood-flow and ultrasound signals from the brain and corrects dysfunctional circuits by non-invasive or invasive means to treat, prevent and manage mental and behavioural problems. Its scope covers brain stimulation, sensory and cognitive circuit retraining, BCI signal decoding and AI-driven multimodal precision mental health. KISTEP expects precision psychiatry that integrates neuromodulation, digital therapeutics and AI to take off by 2030 to 2035, with targets widening to depression, anxiety, compulsion and addiction and tailored stimulation protocols becoming common. Moving from drugs and hospitalisation to circuit and behaviour based treatment could reduce relapse and chronicity. Non-invasive electroceuticals and remote treatment could also reach regions and vulnerable groups with poor access to care, while suicide and the burden of mental illness are expected to decline.
