Signal India's Tech Workers Face Suicide Wave Amid AI Layoffs and Overwork
Summary
An analysis of the crisis facing India's tech workers points to a combination of long hours, high pressure conditions and AI driven job threats behind a continuing wave of worker suicides. It found 227 reported suicides among Indian tech workers between 2017 and 2025, many linked to work pressure. Eighty three percent of surveyed tech workers reported experiencing burnout. One in four said they worked more than 70 hours a week, beyond the legal cap of 48 hours. AI driven automation is making outsourcing work and entry level coding jobs especially vulnerable to layoffs, tying rising job insecurity directly to the accelerating adoption of AI in India's tech industry.
