Signal QuiX Quantum Delivers World's First Single-Photon Universal Quantum Computer (2026)

Summary

Dutch startup QuiX Quantum raised a €15 million Series A and on July 14, 2026 announced Carina, a universal photonic quantum computing architecture built for the DLR Quantum Computing Initiative's (DLR QCI) Universal Photonic Quantum Computer (UPQC) project, funded by Germany's federal research ministry. Carina uses measurement-based quantum computing with single photons as physical qubits, operates at room temperature, and integrates photon generation, multiplexing and control into one stack designed to sit in standard data centers alongside classical HPC and AI infrastructure. QuiX Quantum CEO Stefan Hengesbach called it "a major milestone for QuiX and the photonic quantum computing industry towards deploying utility-scale quantum systems at customer sites." The hardware has been delivered to DLR QCI's innovation centers for multi-month integration, calibration and operational-readiness benchmarking. QuiX plans to use Carina as a physical validation layer for its next-generation Dedalo architecture, which will add full-scale logical qubit routing and loss protection, backed by "below-threshold" error mitigation. QuiX is a Dutch-German company with offices in Enschede, Amsterdam, Stuttgart and Ulm that in 2022 became the first company to sell both 8-qubit and 64-qubit photonic quantum computers to DLR QCI.
