Signal Korea's manufacturing base is strong but its physical AI platform ecosystem is nascent
Summary
Korea has reached a considerable level in basic infrastructure such as smart-factory deployment and collaborative robots, but tying these into an integrated physical AI ecosystem is still at an early stage. Recently, public-private bodies such as the K-Humanoid Alliance and the Manufacturing AX Alliance have begun operating in earnest, accelerating ecosystem building. The author argues that Korea's field base, where physical AI can actually operate and be validated, is second to none. That base consists of a high share of advanced manufacturing such as semiconductors, automobiles, shipbuilding and batteries, years of smart-factory digitalization and a tightly linked supply chain from large firms to small ones. Manufacturing accounts for about 24 percent of Korea's GDP as of 2023, according to World Bank data cited in the article. For such an economy the shift to autonomous manufacturing is presented as a structural leap that redefines competitiveness across industry.
