Trend Climate Change boundary strongly transgressed and still worsening
Summary
The two control variables for the climate boundary, atmospheric carbon dioxide and human-caused radiative forcing, reached 426 ppm and +3.10 W/m2 in the 2026 assessment, long past their safe levels of 350 ppm and +1 W/m2. Both values are still climbing, and the report classifies the boundary as strongly transgressed. Greenhouse gases from fossil fuels, forest clearing and land alteration are trapping heat, driving higher temperatures, melting ice sheets, rising seas and harsher extremes. Satellite records show the gap between incoming and outgoing energy widening steadily, so the warming already committed but not yet realized keeps growing. The report sees this as raising the odds of self-reinforcing change and irreversible tipping points. It warns that without swift action, ecosystems, human health and social stability could be damaged for generations.
