Summary

Digital phenotyping, the continuous real-time collection of behavioural, environmental, social, medical and psychological data through wearables and sensors, is not a new idea. Such data could support both the detection and long-term tracking of disease. It could also inform precision nutrition tailored to individuals. Integrated with genomics, digital phenotyping becomes an area of future opportunity that could make precision medicine affordable and scalable and public health more responsive. Protecting patient data and building international cooperation will both be essential for this to happen.
