Signal Paper frames reproducible research as context engineering for AI coding agents
Summary
A preprint argues that reproducible research practices should be reinterpreted as a form of context engineering for AI coding agents. The author explains that agentic AI lowers the cost of maintaining tests, commit histories, repository structure, documentation and decision records. At the same time, it makes the benefits of that maintenance felt immediately rather than as a delayed payoff. The paper nonetheless stresses that researchers remain responsible for verifying both the artifacts AI agents produce and the scientific judgments embedded within them. In this sense, the paper notes, good reproducibility practice is becoming increasingly load-bearing infrastructure within agent-assisted research workflows.
