Signal Microsoft signs carbon removal deal with wastewater treatment firm Crew Carbon
Summary
Microsoft signed a carbon removal purchase agreement for up to 23,602 tons with Crew Carbon, according to a report published 2026-08-06. Crew's proprietary wastewater alkalinity enhancement (WAE) technology doses alkaline minerals such as calcium carbonate into existing wastewater treatment plants, converting dissolved CO2 into stable bicarbonate that is discharged into oceans, rivers or aquifers. The company says it can move a treatment plant from initial assessment to full deployment in about three months without new infrastructure. The deal is Microsoft's third carbon removal purchase this year and brings Crew Carbon's total committed contracts to more than $40 million, with other buyers including JPMorgan, Google, Autodesk and Stripe via Frontier. Microsoft is pursuing the agreement as part of its goal to become carbon negative by 2030.
