Signal Cyclone Ditwah the deadliest event in the table
Summary
Tropical cyclone Ditwah struck Sri Lanka in November 2025, causing 1,823 confirmed deaths and 4.1 billion dollars in losses. That is the highest death toll among the 21 most damaging weather events the report compiles for April 2025 to April 2026. A dedicated attribution study was carried out for the event and found that human-induced climate change raised its likelihood or intensity. In the same month several parts of Asia suffered heavy damage in quick succession, including from Senyar in Indonesia and typhoon Kalmaegi in the Philippines. The report finds it striking how few events were not made worse by climate change. It also holds that the scale of harm from extremes grows with other boundary transgressions and with community vulnerability.
