Signal Made in China 2025 review shows strong self-sufficiency gains in some sectors and weakness in others
Summary
Evaluating China's self-sufficiency across the ten Made in China 2025 industries shows that US tariffs on Chinese goods since Trump's first term have spurred Chinese self-reliance. A Rhodium Group study cited by the report assessed the targeted sectors by import dependence, reliance on foreign firms, emergence of technology leaders and global competitiveness. It found highly successful self-sufficiency in advanced rail equipment, power generation equipment and agricultural machinery. China remains weak, however, in new materials, aerospace equipment, and biopharmaceuticals and advanced medical devices. Import dependence has nonetheless fallen in all ten industries.
