Signal Beyond the Prank: The Hidden Expertise of TSS Scambaiters

Summary

This research examines Technical Support Scams and how they are countered by a dedicated volunteer counter-fraud community known as scambaiters. Using a careful subject selection strategy, the authors interviewed 17 individuals who actively engage in scambaiting activities to understand their motivations, the operational methods of the scammers they combat, the undocumented nuances of effective countermeasures, and the challenges scambaiters face. The analysis finds a community rich not only in insight into offenders but also in technical and operational expertise that is often lacking in academic research on these same populations. At the same time the study identifies areas where the community could be better supported and enabled. The authors discuss the implications of these findings for future research and community protection strategies.
