Signal Canada and Germany sign General Security of Information Agreement
Summary
Canada and Germany signed a General Security of Information Agreement, announced on Sept. 25, 2026 by Ministers Joël Lightbound and Anita Anand during the German foreign minister's visit to Canada. The agreement sets a framework for the secure exchange of sensitive information, including intelligence, sensitive operational information and technical data related to defence and security. It expands opportunities for Canadian industry to take part in German contracts involving classified information, including the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project. The government says it supports cooperation in defence, security, aerospace, marine, energy and space. Bilateral merchandise trade reached $34.3 billion in 2025, making Germany Canada's sixth-largest trading partner and its largest within the EU. Canada has signed similar agreements with France, the European Space Agency, Spain, Portugal, Poland and Ukraine.
