Signal Generative AI smartphones projected to rise from about a third of shipments in 2025 to 74 percent in 2029

Summary

KISDI reports that generative AI functions are becoming a core specification of premium smartphones and, during 2025 and 2026, are spreading to mid and low-priced lines as well. Citing Gartner, it states that the share of generative AI smartphones in global shipments is projected to rise from 33 percent in 2025 to 74 percent in 2029. By 2029 almost all premium smartphones are expected to be generative AI models, and 46 percent of basic smartphones are also expected to make the switch. Omdia, using a different definition of AI-capable phones, projects their shipment share to grow from 30.9 percent in 2025 to 56.3 percent in 2029. The institute treats this shift as a factor that stimulates replacement demand in the handset market.
