Trend Animal-alternative testing platforms: organoids, organ chips and medical twins
Summary
Animal-alternative testing platforms replace or complement in vivo animal experiments with advanced human-mimetic in vitro systems and in silico virtual trials. They use models built from human cells and tissues to evaluate the efficacy, toxicity and safety of drugs precisely. The scope covers organoids, organ chips or microphysiological systems, and medical twins. KISTEP expects combined organoid and organ chip platforms to make animal replacement widespread by 2030 to 2035, and a new data-intensive preclinical platform linking AI and medical twins to emerge. The anticipated result is higher clinical success rates together with shorter and cheaper drug development.
