Signal The PIONEER Project: A PrIvacy companion for mOtivatioN and knowlEdge transfER
Summary
Remaining in control of one's personal data is one of the key challenges users face today. Prior work shows that users are often neither in a position to fully grasp the content of typically complicated privacy texts nor motivated to spend the time needed to do so. This paper reports on progress made by the PIONEER project, which combines knowledge transfer with persuasive elements to raise both users' privacy awareness and their motivation through a support tool. The research and design process took into account requirements that can differ across user groups such as children, adolescents, parents and elderly people. The project targets sustainable behavior change by addressing stages of change including sparking initial motivation, facilitating new habit formation and encouraging long-term habituation. It also provides a demonstrator of the privacy support tool that can be used for research and education, for example in school settings.
