Signal Reconfiguring geovisualization in the age of generative AI
Summary
Researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 geovisualization experts to see how generative AI is reshaping professional practice across four domains: data, ideation, prototyping and iteration. The findings show that generative AI expands capabilities especially in data handling, creative exploration and rapid prototyping, but it does not simply remove existing constraints. Instead the key bottleneck shifts from production to judgment and verification, with professional value increasingly resting on spatial reasoning, contextual interpretation and ethical judgment about whether AI outputs are appropriate. The study says generative AI raises new issues around provenance, interpretability and accountability. It also poses the question of how that responsibility should be divided among models, developers, practitioners, institutions and users.
