Trend Men's hormonal, metabolic and environmental health becomes a contested biological frontier
Summary
GWI's Men's Wellbeing Initiative argues that three strands of evidence are turning men's biological health into a highly consequential and contested field. On hormones, the large TRAVERSE trial showed cardiovascular safety for monitored testosterone therapy and regulators removed a boxed warning, while prescriptions rose fastest among men aged 35 to 44. On metabolism, one analysis found metabolic syndrome in men rising from 9.0% in 2000 to 25.7% in 2023, affecting an estimated 692 million men. On fertility, a meta-analysis reported sperm concentration falling 51.6% between 1973 and 2018, though another study found no clinically significant decline among fertile American men. Environmental exposure adds heat-driven kidney disease among young farm workers. The Initiative warns that framing testosterone as optimization blurs clinical and lifestyle lines.
