Trend New engineering and AI professions emerging as others are replaced
Summary
In the short term, the report expects new occupations in fields such as electrical engineering, bioengineering and applied AI to emerge and grow. Roles such as accountants, software coders and analysts, by contrast, could gradually be taken over by AI. The report sees rapidly advancing AI as likely to have a big effect on the labour market, with automation alone forecast to affect up to a third of UK jobs. Job displacement need not mean higher unemployment, but workers may need to upskill to move into technical roles. Further ahead, it foresees software engineers moving into related jobs such as prompt engineering or AI ethics.
