Signal Study Finds Visualization Tools Systemically Underserve Arabic Right-to-Left Users
Summary
A study examined how Arabic-speaking visualization practitioners work within tools and guidelines built primarily for left-to-right, English-language conventions. Researchers evaluated seven popular GUI-based visualization authoring tools using an Arabic dataset and interviewed 11 Arabic-speaking practitioners across journalism, design, and data analysis fields. Practitioners reported having to manually mirror charts, fix alignment issues, and stitch together multiple tools to accommodate right-to-left text and Eastern Arabic numerals. The tool evaluation found fragmented and inconsistent RTL mirroring support, poor numeral rendering, and map defaults that embed geopolitical assumptions. The authors argue that visualization tools and their defaults operationalize linguistic and geopolitical power in ways that disadvantage the more than two billion users of Arabic script. They call for design directions that more robustly support right-to-left practitioners.
