Trend AI turns sleep tracking into predictive health monitoring
Summary
GWI's Sleep Initiative reports that artificial intelligence is changing how people understand, track and improve their sleep. Wearables and phone apps gather signals such as movement, heart rate variability, breathing and temperature, and machine learning turns them into estimates of sleep length, stages and disturbances. Smart mattresses and bedroom systems go further, adjusting temperature, support, light or sound in response to signals during the night. AI is also helping detect conditions such as sleep apnea and insomnia earlier and enabling remote monitoring. The most promising use may be prediction, since sleep involves the brain, heart and lungs, and a 2026 Stanford model predicted risk of many diseases from sleep data. Privacy, accuracy and obsessive tracking remain concerns the Initiative flags.
