Signal Studies quantify large electricity savings from cloud, AI-model and fab cooling efficiency

Summary

One cited study estimates that lifting corporate cloud computing productivity to the 80th percentile would cut total electricity use by 17 percent. Combining pruning and knowledge distillation on the ELECTRA language model reduced energy consumption by 23.86 percent against the baseline model. In semiconductor manufacturing, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems account for 40 to 60 percent of a fab's total energy use. Applying AI-based predictive control to that equipment is reported to reduce cooling energy by 9.4 percent. Together these results suggest that software and operational innovation can accumulate even as AI and chip demand grow.
