Signal 6G standardisation targets commercial systems by 2030

Summary

The International Telecommunication Union is working on 6G standards with the goal of making commercial 6G systems available by 2030. Part of that work involves responding to concerns raised by the International Air Transport Association about possible interference with aviation. Adoption of the previous generation is still climbing, with 5G expected to carry 85% of mobile data by 2031, up from 48% at the end of 2025. 6G is expected to deliver higher speeds than current networks. It should also enable digital twins and stronger connectivity for Internet of Things sensor networks and devices.
