Trend Sleep diagnosis migrates from clinical labs to home testing and telemedicine
Summary
GWI's Sleep Initiative reports that sleep diagnosis is moving out of the laboratory and into the home. For most of the history of sleep medicine, a diagnosis required a costly night in a clinic, which many people could not manage. Portable devices can now track breathing, oxygen saturation, heart rate and interruptions during an ordinary night at home, and research confirms their reliability when reviewed by trained clinicians. Telemedicine lets specialists interpret this data remotely, reducing barriers and allowing earlier treatment. Consumer wearables such as smartwatches and rings do not replace diagnosis but often act as a first signal prompting people to seek help. The Initiative says the line between sleep wellness and sleep medicine is becoming more permeable.
