The bottom layer, writing code, is now being lost to AI. Much engineering work already involves design, merging workstreams and leading teams, and everyone is being pushed in that direction because AI writes the code. Nonprogrammers are entering the IT function as well, with product managers and user experience designers helping with coding through shared AI-produced artifacts. Yegge sees a new translation layer between business and IT, with small teams such as an engineer, a financial analyst and a marketer building software together. He argues companies are under-hiring junior developers and should hire adaptable, open-minded people and give them room to learn from mistakes.
