Trend Toward permanent preparedness and One Health as organising model
Summary
The report finds that one lesson from covid is that global attention to pandemics has shifted from crisis care to permanent preparedness with continuous, well-integrated surveillance. One Health will increasingly become the leading organisational model, meaning closer links between public health, veterinary care and nature and environmental policy. In the Netherlands, healthcare capacity will in addition have to take periodic peak loads into account. Increased contact between people, livestock and wild animals not only raises the risk of new zoonoses but also disturbs ecosystems, and the report records that a link between biodiversity loss, ecosystem damage and the emergence of pandemics has been established. Zoonoses burden the livestock sector and cause wider social and economic damage, such as disrupted supply chains, export and import restrictions and reduced tourism and travel.
