Signal PIK set up a Planetary Boundaries Science Lab in 2025
Summary
The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research set up the Planetary Boundaries Science Lab in 2025 to advance the framework and coordinate the annual Planetary Health Check. The lab is co-creating a multi-institution Planetary Boundaries Initiative to scale this work globally and turn up-to-date science into real-world change. The initiative is planned around three pillars, science for diagnostics, science for solutions, and communication and community for action. At its centre is the Planetary Boundaries Analyzer, still under development, which combines Earth observation, models, socioeconomic data and literature to speed up assessments and support continuous updates and causal analysis. These capabilities are to be offered through a free decision-support platform for scientists, policymakers and civil society. The lab openly invites researchers, institutions, Indigenous knowledge holders and others who use the planetary boundaries to take part.
