Signal China still misses self-sufficiency targets in chips and other bottleneck fields
Summary
Despite its self-reliance drive, China still has weak links in its supply chains. The assessment cited by the report finds self-sufficiency targets only partly met for sensors, memory and mobile chips, CPUs and GPUs, high-performance medical equipment, high-end CNC machines and parts, and core components for energy-saving and new-energy vehicles. The same is true for driver assistance and partial automation systems, aerospace maintenance and parts, and advanced shipbuilding equipment. Semiconductors, the focus of intensive US controls, missed most of their targets. Because advanced chips, AI, biopharma, hydrogen energy, robotics and new materials are still at introduction or growth stages in China, demand for imported high-end components and materials is expected to continue.
