Trend Global backlash against gender, LGBTIQA+ and migrant rights
Summary
The report sees a global backlash against gender equality and minority rights. In many countries there are attempts to roll back established rights on sexuality, reproductive health and feminism, and anti-gender movements have grown. In Europe hostility towards migrants, especially from the Islamic world, has deepened, bringing more hate speech and discriminatory policy, alongside more measures that erode LGBTIQA+ rights. Hungary, Russia and others have tightened repressive laws, while the US has withdrawn protective measures. In the Netherlands too, influenced partly by foreign, religious and conservative sources, some question equality between men and women or suggest homosexuality should be banned again, and there is anger at transgender people and resistance to commemorations of the end of slavery.
