Issue Conflicting worldviews and perceived versus actual polarisation
Summary
Among the structural consequences of a permanently unstable world order, the report holds that global geopolitical developments feed the existence of multiple diverging and clashing worldviews. In the Netherlands these views are spread through networks, social media and traditional media. This can create the impression that Dutch people are increasingly set against one another, even though differences of opinion across society are actually narrowing. The report warns that solidarity among citizens may suffer if more people come to be seen as 'the other'. Disagreement over worldviews could also erode trust in societal institutions such as government and the courts, according to the report.
