Signal Korea put the AI Basic Act and National AI Committee into operation while expanding R&D budgets
Summary
The Lee Jae-myung government adopted becoming one of the top three AI powers and building science and technology on solid foundations as its strategy. Its national tasks focus on commercialising AI, widening autonomy in R&D and shifting to negative regulation. Institutions such as the AI Basic Act and the National AI Committee have been put into effect, and long-term investment plans are being carried out. The government is also expanding the R&D budget and widening the selection and support of national strategic technologies. In science and technology it is reforming how R&D is supported, including researcher autonomy and the freedom to fail. The report judges that these policies will pay off only if the industrial innovation ecosystem works and weaknesses in global supply chains are overcome.
