Signal UN Climate Chief: "Faster energy transitions are core to national security"

UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell, speaking on July 24 2026 at a UN General Assembly informal interactive dialogue on the global energy transition, said faster energy transitions are core to national security and that the global energy transition is now irreversible. He noted that Southeast Asia's energy import bill reached 160 billion dollars in 2026, while Eastern Caribbean states spent more than 440 million dollars annually on fossil fuel imports in 2021, equal to 15 percent of total imports and 17 percent of the trade balance. He urged developed countries to actually deliver on their existing pledge to triple adaptation finance, moving toward 300 billion dollars a year by 2035 and scaling to one point three trillion dollars annually after that. He also referenced the COP28 commitments to triple renewable capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030. In addition he noted that Turkiye, the incoming COP presidency, has proposed an action agenda target of 35 percent global electrification by 2035.
