Issue Uncertain balance of AI job displacement and creation
Summary
The report considers the scale of job losses from AI and of new roles it may create to be still uncertain. AI could severely disrupt some sectors, leading to unemployment and a shortage of training opportunities and sparking public debate on the future of work and education. On the other hand, deskilling of positions by AI could make some roles accessible to more people. Jobs involving repetitive tasks, such as in finance and insurance, are currently the most exposed to automation, and the report also suggests frontier AI may be used more for augmentation through collaboration with people than for full automation. It links this to the chronic risk of disproportionate impacts on vulnerable persons, since biased AI data and job displacement could widen inequality.
