Signal KEEI projects Korea's building city gas use to fall from 14.0 to 12.9 billion cubic metres by 2030 as heat pumps spread

Summary

Buildings are the largest user of city gas in Korea, consuming about 14.0 billion cubic metres in 2025, or 64.2 percent of the total. That share is more than twice the 31.9 percent used by industry. Following the government's heat pump promotion policy of December 2025, the institute expects building demand for city gas to decline gradually. With heating degree days falling 0.3 percent a year from 2025 to 2030 and heat pumps spreading, building city gas use is projected to drop steadily to 12.9 billion cubic metres in 2030. The building share of city gas consumption would then fall to 59.7 percent.
