Signal Satellite Constellations Surge: Starlink 9,600 Sats, Amazon LEO Launch, ESA Celeste PNT

Summary

SpaceX began lowering roughly 4,400 Starlink satellites from about 550 km to about 480 km over the course of 2026, a move announced after a Starlink satellite failed and vented propellant while tumbling out of control, and after a Chinese satellite launch reportedly came within 200 meters of another Starlink unit. The company said the lower altitude cuts ballistic decay time by more than 80% during solar minimum, reducing collision risk from a growing volume of orbital debris and rival mega-constellations. By March 2026 Starlink had launched its first satellites of the year, expanding the constellation to roughly 9,500 satellites in orbit, making SpaceX the world's largest satellite operator. Amazon's Project Kuiper aims to place more than 3,000 satellites in orbit, while China is reported to plan more than 10,000 satellites for a rival network, raising broader Kessler Syndrome concerns. ESA's Celeste low-earth-orbit positioning, navigation and timing (LEO-PNT) constellation launched its first satellites on 28 March 2026 at roughly 510 km altitude via a Rocket Lab Electron rocket from Mahia, New Zealand, as part of a planned 10-satellite constellation plus two spares. The moves collectively mark a period of rapid, safety-driven reconfiguration across the commercial and government satellite sector.
