Signal Adaptation Fund Strengthens Country Ownership with New National Entities in Mexico and Nepal, Re-Accredits UNESCO

Summary

The Adaptation Fund, announcing from Washington, DC on 21 July 2026, accredited Mexico's FMCN (Fondo Mexicano para la Conservación de la Naturaleza) and Nepal's LI-BIRD as National Implementing Entities, letting those countries access climate finance directly for locally led adaptation projects. Both organisations become the second accredited NIE in their respective countries, joining Kenya, Senegal and Bhutan as nations with two accredited NIEs. UNESCO was re-accredited as a Multilateral Implementing Entity. The Adaptation Fund has now accredited 41 National Implementing Entities globally, about half of them in least-developed countries or small island developing states, alongside 9 Regional Implementing Entities and 14 Multilateral Implementing Entities. Since 2010 the Fund has committed more than US$1.6 billion to 226 adaptation projects benefiting over 90 million people in total.
