Signal Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework being implemented
Summary
The report builds on the Paris Agreement but argues that climate stabilization cannot come from emission cuts alone and that respecting the other planetary boundaries is a precondition for any credible climate pathway. This is because forests, soils, oceans, fresh water and ecosystems store carbon, recycle moisture and buffer heat. In this light, the report judges that international efforts are slowly moving in the right direction. Implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework is under way, and the report reads its progress as a sign of strong international commitment to halting and reversing biodiversity loss. It lists the framework alongside the High Seas Treaty, the plastics treaty negotiations, the desertification convention and the Montreal Protocol as international mechanisms that support recovery of the boundaries.
