Summary

The second megatrend describes a sweeping transformation of every sector of society driven by AI, digital technology and wider technological innovation. Technology is treated as the core engine of social change, but its social and ethical side effects are expected to persist alongside the benefits. Its key terms are digital transformation, AI convergence, technological innovation, innovation ecosystems and transcendent technologies. The committee renamed an earlier label focused on technology-led industrial and social innovation, reasoning that such innovation is an outcome of technological progress rather than a separate driver. For Korea, the report warns that if AI surpasses human intelligence without the country securing technological sovereignty, it risks permanent technological dependence. The megatrend holds three trends, on the shift to a superintelligent society, changes in life and space, and harmonising technology with human values.
