Issue Major progress on UK air, water and soil pollution
Summary
The report offers major progress in UK management of air, water and soil pollution as a positive possibility among its long-term uncertainties. Better control of both legacy pollutants and recently emerged ones could allow people to reconnect with nature. The Environment Act 2021, with its targets for air, water, waste and biodiversity, and the Clean Air Strategy 2019 are presented as tools supporting this. The Circular Economy Package aims to reduce waste and optimise resource use, backed by bans and taxes on plastic waste. The report holds that keeping pollutants out of the environment benefits plant and animal health. Less pollution and degradation would also support action on climate change and better public health, easing pressure on the health system.
