Issue Deepening food security crisis under climate change
Summary
Global climate change is steadily increasing the instability of food production worldwide, which is expected to raise the likelihood of price spikes and global food shortages. Agriculture, forestry, fisheries and food are more sensitive to climate than other industries, so an accelerating climate crisis directly destabilises production. Land and marine space for food production is limited, and food security is already under pressure from demographic change, conflicts and economic crises, so climate change could threaten the production base itself. Disruption of farming systems is expected to bring more frequent pests and livestock epidemics, while fisheries output, an environmentally friendly protein source, is already falling because of climate change and marine pollution. The survey calls for advanced technologies focused on adaptation and for global cooperation, noting that food insecurity is tied to human survival and has historically triggered wars.
