Summary

Higher Paths asks what would happen if higher education were judged by the quality of the years spent rather than their number. It envisions a shift to personalised, practical learning that puts critical thinking and real-world problem-solving first, producing lifelong learners whose success is measured by demonstrated competence rather than fixed time periods. In June 2025, 264 million students were enrolled at universities. The top core skills sought in the future workforce are analytical thinking, resilience and agility, leadership, creative thinking and motivation, yet traditional linear degrees often fail to prepare students for a changing world. The benefits include faster learning pathways and closer alignment with technology, while the risks include endless learning loops, misaligned standards, a lack of global agreement on credentials and high operating costs.
