Signal 800× Better Logical Qubits Demonstrated On Quantinuum Hardware And Now Published In Nature
Summary
Independently peer-reviewed results were published in Nature on 10 June 2026 confirming that Microsoft and Quantinuum achieved an 800-fold reduction in quantum error rates on real trapped-ion hardware, the largest gap between physical and logical error rates ever independently validated. The paper, titled 'Improved quantum processor logical error rates via correction and detection,' reports logical error-rate improvements ranging from 11x to 800x over corresponding physical circuit baselines. In a Bell-state preparation test specifically, the logical circuit error rate fell from roughly 0.8% for the physical baseline to 0.001%, yielding the 800x figure. The work applied Microsoft's error-diagnostics and correction platform to Quantinuum's trapped-ion hardware and was conducted in partnership with Microsoft. This peer-reviewed publication follows and validates results originally announced in April 2024. Quantinuum has since advanced further, with its newer Helios system running 48 logical qubits on trapped-ion hardware.
