Gartner frames AI-native development as a sourcing decision as well as a tooling change. Because generative platforms let small teams build software faster and more cheaply, the report expects chief information officers to clear backlogs and shift the build-versus-buy balance toward building. Chief executives and finance chiefs are described as drawn by the potential cost savings. What the report does not weigh is the other side of that shift. It says nothing about the added maintenance burden, the effect on supplier relationships or the full lifetime cost of owning more custom software over time.
