Issue Untreatable livestock diseases hitting farming and aquaculture
Summary
Among the longer-term uncertainties, the report points to severe damage to farming and aquaculture. If common infectious diseases of livestock can no longer be treated, these industries could be badly hit. In the short term, too, the report expects resistance to cause animal treatments to fail and crop protection to become harder. It explains that agriculture could face lower livestock welfare and productivity and rising costs for the treatments that still work. In its chapter on animal diseases, the report adds that warmer winters could bring more disease-carrying ticks, and together with more resistant infections this could raise livestock deaths and affect UK farmers and food supply.
