Issue Building codes rewritten for the climate a building will actually face

This opportunity argues that building codes must look beyond net zero commitments and prepare structures for the climate they will actually face. Future climate scenarios imply that homes and other buildings constructed now must be designed for substantially different conditions. Under current practice, such buildings may last only 10 to 80 years, and far less in the hot Gulf Cooperation Council countries even where new codes apply. Many cities have adopted green building codes, but these need to shift from green standards towards climate-resilient standards. Japan's Net Zero Energy Building Roadmap, which requires all buildings to meet net zero standards by 2030, illustrates the challenge, since it is unlikely to be achieved without major upgrades.
