Issue Workers retraining out of declining professions into AI roles
Summary
Over the longer term, the report suggests that workers may retrain and leave declining professions. Software engineers, for example, could move into related new roles such as AI prompt engineers or AI ethicists. In the short term, the report expects roles such as accountants, software coders and analysts to be gradually replaced by AI while jobs in electrical engineering, bioengineering and applied AI emerge. Automation alone is forecast to affect up to a third of UK jobs, though displacement does not necessarily raise unemployment. The report sees AI-powered tutoring as making retraining easier and widening opportunity. It warns, however, that people in lower-paid jobs may be more exposed to and disrupted by rapid labour market change.
