Signal Beyond the Desert Label: A Pathway Diagnostic for Smart Mobility Service Design
Summary
Smart-city mobility platforms increasingly rely on spatial screening tools to identify neighborhoods where transit service is weak. However, a single transit desert label can obscure two very different problems, a localized mismatch between service and concentrated demand, and a basic absence of usable service. This paper introduces a reproducible diagnostic that distinguishes the two by combining several open datasets and using a spatial statistics technique to detect spatially coherent mismatch. The researchers also report which service attributes, including frequency, span of hours, weekend service, walking access and destination accessibility, drive each classification. Applying the tool to Baltimore, Philadelphia, Nashville and Dallas showed that legacy-transit cities were dominated by localized mismatch while auto-oriented cities showed broader minimum-service failure. The work was accepted for a smart cities conference workshop held in Porto, Portugal.
