Signal US, German and Chinese players take distinct routes to factory physical AI
Summary
Major countries and global firms have already entered a fierce race to occupy the factory floor. The United States, led by NVIDIA, Tesla, Figure AI and Boston Dynamics, is pursuing vertical integration of hardware, software and data. Tesla's Optimus humanoid is being piloted in its own gigafactory for data collection and learning, creating a closed loop in which field data keeps improving the robot's AI. German incumbents such as Siemens and Bosch are integrating digital twins with physical AI in cooperation with NVIDIA, and predictive maintenance and autonomous process optimization are entering commercial use. China is internalizing the manufacturing AI supply chain through state-led investment, spreading industrial models such as Huawei's Pangu and nurturing humanoid start-ups like Unitree, UBTech and AgiBot. The author reads these contrasting approaches as evidence that the contest has moved beyond firms into national strategy.
