Signal Population outcomes diverge sharply by innovation-city development type
Summary
How an innovation city was built strongly shapes its migration pattern and local effects. New towns built outside existing cities showed limited capital-region dispersion, drew much of their population from nearby mother cities and accelerated the hollowing of old downtowns as new housing concentrated there. New urban extensions on vacant land inside large cities attracted relatively many people in their twenties but have shown persistent net outflow since relocation ended. The redevelopment type in Busan, which reused existing urban infrastructure, recorded the highest settlement satisfaction in the country at 75.2 points and the highest family relocation rate at 85.5 percent. Education and culture reasons also account for a large share of inflows there, which the report cites as evidence of the relative effectiveness of regeneration-based relocation.
